The Australian Financial Review is reporting that they have exclusive information that Apple’s products are the most sought after gadgets in Australia. According to the article, Australians surfed the internet for iPhones and iPads more than any other product in 2012.
Unfortunately for Apple, Samsung is not too far behind. It appears Apple’s patent lawsuit cases against Samsung Down Under has enhanced rather than devalued Samsung’s brand in the eyes of the Australian public.
Back in December 2011, Tyler McGee, Samsung’s Vice-President of Telecommunications in Australia, stated:
At the end of the day the media awareness certainly made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a household name compared to probably what it would’ve been based on the investment that we would’ve put into it from a marketing perspective.
It appears Mr. McGee had a point.
Samsung was hot on Apple’s heels, with its popular products taking three of the top 10 spots,” David Raml writes for The Australian Financial Review. “New-release Apple products from last year topped the pile, with the iPhone 5 the most searched for gadget by Australians. This was followed by the iPad 3, launched in October. Following closely behind was the Samsung Galaxy SIII and SII, with Amazon’s Kindle and the Kobo electronic reader also appearing.”
According to the post, IBRS analyst James Turner believes the appearance of e-book retailers was the most surprising addition to the top 10 list.
According to James Turner:
They started as a quirky idea with a price point that made it a potential risk for people who thought they may or may not use it. But now we’ve got the majority of people looking at it and thinking ‘yes, this may be something I can use.
There was a lot of a build-up for the iPhone 5 and I think there was a kerfuffle about the features and the docks. But ultimately it was a device people were still super keen on getting. I’m not at all surprised by the strength shown by Samsung because the users I’ve spoken to that own those devices are incredibly happy with them.
