The Inquirer (via Israeli newspaper Calcalist) is reporting that Apple is in talks to buy Primesense – the company collaborated with Microsoft to create the first generation Kinect sensor. Microsoft used Primesense technology, chips, and designs in the first Kinect accessory for the Xbox 360 console.
The Israeli newspaper states that the two companies are currently locked in negotiations, with Apple has reportedly offered $280 million to acquire the Israeli semiconductor company.
“The negotiations between the companies is indeed early stages, but the Apple at the highest levels considering the company’s technology and its adaptation to future Apple product,” according to the newspaper report.
“Apparently, the proposal was made when the Israeli company visited Apple’s headquarters to pitch embedding its 3D sensor technology in Apple products,” Lee Bell writes for the Inquirer. “There are mutterings, too, that some of Apple’s senior engineering managers that specialise in optical hardware visited the Primesense head office in Israel earlier this month.”
