Qualcomm: Apple’s 64-bit A7 Processor Is Not A “Marketing Gimmick”

Apple Event

It appears that Qualcomm CMO Anand Chandrasekher has gotten into trouble with his bosses for declaring in a recent interview, that Apple’s 64-bit architecture in their A7 Chip was a marketing gimmick.

“I know there’s a lot of noise because Apple did [64-bit] on their A7,” Chandrasekher said. “I think they are doing a marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that.”

Chandrasekher’s comments has forced the Qualcomm PR department to distance themselves from these remarks.

“The comments made by Anand Chandrasekher, Qualcomm CMO, about 64-bit computing were inaccurate,” a Qualcomm spokesperson said in an email. “The mobile hardware and software ecosystem is already moving in the direction of 64-bit; and, the evolution to 64-bit brings desktop class capabilities and user experiences to mobile, as well as enabling mobile processors and software to run new classes of computing devices.”

At the time, we reported that Anand Chandrasekher’s comments were likely inaccurate, pointing to a report from AppleInsider Daniel Eran Dilger.

Daniel Eran Dilger said: “This process [64-bit] has already improved Apple’s own software that’s bundled on the iPhone 5s, which has all been recompiled for 64-bit, from the kernel to libraries and drivers to apps such as Safari, Mail, Photos and Maps. There is a marked increase in performance observed in moving from 32-bit to 64-bit benchmarks on the same hardware, in addition to the baseline improvement of the A7 over the A6 seen in 32-bit benchmarks.”
