Digitimes is reporting that Apple is set to launch a low-cost iPhone  Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2013 in June. However, the Cupertino-based company is likely to ship in small volume to test the market. This information came from sources from the iPhone supply chain in Taiwan, the report states.

“Speculation currently circulating in the iPhone supply chain in Taiwan indicate that Apple plans to launch an inexpensive model targeting emerging markets with initial quarterly shipments of only 2.5-3.0 million units to test market response,”  Ninelu Tu and Steve Shen report for Digitimes. “The low-cost iPhone is expected to come with a 4-inch LTPS panel powered by an A6 processor, optimizing the high yield rates of mature components.”

Only recently,  the same website reported that Apple shipped 12.5 million iPad minis last quarter that accounted for roughly 64% of all iPads shipped. Based on these figures, its highly likely that lowering the price on the iPhone will inevitably lead to huge demand.

According to the report, sources also confirmed that the low-cost iPhone will be built using cost-effective plastic chassis.  In addition, Apple is expected to use existing ODM partners such as Foxconn Electronics Group and Pegatron to produce of the low-cost iPhone model.
