Breakdown of Apple’s Q3 – 2012 earnings

Apple earnings 03 - 2012

Apple has released it’s earnings for the third quarter ending 30th June 2012. CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer spoke to Analysts at Apple’s Q312 Conference Call.

So here is what we know:

  • Apple will launch its Mountain Lion operating system tomorrow/ Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed that Mountain Lion tomorrow and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. OS X Mountain Lion will be available on Wednesday, July 25th from the Mac App Store for US$19.99 and £13.99 in the UK. Mountain Lion requires Lion or Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.8 or later), 2GB of memory and 8GB of available space. For a complete list of system requirements and compatible systems. The OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 11, 2012.
  • In Q3, Apple’s revenue amounted to $35B, with earnings of $9.32 per share. The company’s net profit in Q3 was $8.8B. These numbers ‘missed’ industry estimates slightly but beat Apple’s own safer estimates.
  • Apple closed its record June quarter with $117 billion in cash reserves, up from $110 billion last quarter. Crediting strong sales of almost all products as well as an improved economy. Asia-Pacific growth increased 25% this quarter (down from 100% last quarter), 2/3s of which came from China.

  • Apple announced they would also continue their stock buyback program over the year.

  • Apple has announced a total of 410M iOS devices sold, with more than $5.5 billion in payments to developers. In addition, the company has also shared that there are now as many as 255k iPad apps in the App Store, a feat that Apple reached for the iPhone back in 2010.

  • The app store has been known for bringing in some serious cash for select developers, but it’s particularly interesting to see the ratio of devices sold to cash paid out. Doing some math on these numbers, we can estimate that ($5.5 billion / 410M iOS devices) approximately $13 is paid to developers for each and every iOS device.
  • From Q3 that two-thirds of Apple’s Asia Pacific revenue is coming from Greater China. Revenues in the country were $5.7 billion for the quarter, 48 percent increase on last year, and still growing at an “incredible rate.” To date Apple’s revenues in China for the year now total $12.4 billion. To compare, in 2011 the company made $13.3 billion in China.

  • Apple saw declines in hardware sales in Macs in Asian Pacific region. This was down to 593,000 units, four percent year on year in terms of Mac units. They also increased of 25 percent in terms of revenue to $7.887 billion. But that’s down from growth last quarter of 100 percent.

  • Tim Cook reported that this quarter’s less good performance was down to; iPhone sales and “changes in channel inventory,” but not overlying sales, launching the iPhone 4S in January Apple added China Telecom as a second carrier in March and that “Normal seasonality,” was also a factor. China’s iPhone sales remains were very strong over 100 percent year-on-year.

  • Apple TV sales have risen 170% over last year at this time, with 1.3 million units being moved here in Apple’s fiscal Q3 2012. bringing the fiscal year to 4 million units sold.

  • Over 150 million people on iCloud since launch.
Take away line from Tim Cook when asked about other competing tablets was, “People are buying iPads not tablets.”
