My Initial Thoughts And Close Up Photos of The iPhone 6

  • September 19, 2014

It’s finally here folks. After months of leaks and rumors, many published by yours truly, the iPhone 6 has landed – and it’s a beauty.

Design:

First up, the iPhone 6 feels great in my hands. I don’t have a large hands by any means, so I’m glad I went with the iPhone 6. With new rounded corners and thinner profile design, the device feels smooth and fits well in my hands, far better than the iPhone 5s did. With just a slight adjustment in grip, I was able reach the app in the far upper corner of the device. Saying that, I’m slightly concerned that it’s more likely to slip from my grasp.

The iPhone 6 is thin, really thin. It feels like a fifth generation iPod Touch. The device also feels solid but not heavy by any means. According to Apple’s website, the iPhone 6 weighs 4.55 ounces (129 grams), while the iPhone 5s comes in at 3.95 ounces (112 grams). However, in real world use, the iPhone 6 actually feels lighter.

One new hardware design – antenna bands, caused a lot of panic in the Apple camp (myself included). However, the bands aren’t as scary in person as they are in photos. As you can see, I went for the space grey colour, assuming that the bands wouldn’t stand out as much – I was right. The protruding camera is also less noticeable when holding the physical device. This is a reasonable trade off in my opinion, if it makes the camera better.

The re-positioned power button is super convenient but be warned, you will find yourself reaching for it at the top of the device only to discover it is not there anymore.

Performance:

On the iPhone 6, apps open quicker while the animations render slightly faster in my opinion, Touch ID appears more responsive too. I haven’t spent enough time using the device to give more information on this. Overall the device feels snappier that the iPhone 5s.

Display:

I really don’t have much to say other than it looks fantastic. The colors and text looks great on the large display. I’m not so keen on the zoom mode, this makes the display appears slightly fuzzy.

I’ve only had the device for a few hours, but over the next few days I will post an unboxing video and further thoughts on the best smartphone on the planet.
