Here Comes Apple iWatch Patent – Bi-Stable Spring With Flexible Display (20130044215)

There have been numerous rumors that Apple is in the process of launching an iWatch device. Today the USPTO has published a patent application by Apple in which the company reveals that they are indeed working on such a device.

The patent in question is titled – Bi – Stable Spring With Flexible Display (20130044215)

BI-STABLE SPRING WITH FLEXIBLE DISPLAY 20130044215

Patent Abstract:

[quote] A wearable accessory device is disclosed. The wearable accessory device includes a flexible display coupled to a bi-stable spring. Coupling the display to the bi-stable spring allows the accessory device to be easily worn in a number of convenient locations.[/quote]

The Invention:
[quote] A wearable video device arranged to be worn by an end-user, comprising: a flexible substrate having a flat state and a curled state; a flexible display disposed upon a first surface of the flexible substrate, wherein in the curled state the flexible substrate conforms to an appendage of the end-user, the flexible substrate further comprising: an electronic module in communication with the flexible display, the electronic module providing information to the display, at least a part of which is presented in real time for presentation by the flexible display; and a mechanism for detecting an end portion of the flexible display, the detection for adjusting the arrangement of information shown on the flexible display to match the size of the appendage the wearable video device is mounted on.[/quote]

BI-STABLE SPRING WITH FLEXIBLE DISPLAY

 

Based on the patent description Apple is looking the iWatch fits securely on the wrist of the users by using a flexible substrate. This substrate will then comprise of a flexible display (Apple alluded to the use AMOLED in the patent description) with an electronic module for communication and providing information.

It is quiet amazing Apple is not taking a simpler route in creating this iWatch by having a central face with removal watchbands. Apple’s approach will surely make the watch more accessible to a wide variety of users but not great for third-party accessories makers.
