Financial Times and Rueters Are Reporting That Apple Might Be Working On A Car After All

Rumors that Apple is at least contemplating an entry into the automotive industry with a self driving car has been rampant for weeks. But now we have two reputable news outlets in the Financial Times and Reuters reporting that this might be the case.

Reporting for the Financial Times, Tim Bradshaw and Andy Sharman reveal that Apple is recruiting experts in automotive technology and vehicle design to work at a new top-secret car project that is expecting to go beyond the dashboard.

FT:

[su_quote]Dozens of Apple employees, led by experienced managers from its iPhone unit, are researching automotive products at a confidential Silicon Valley location outside the company’s Cupertino campus, the people said.

Sir Jonathan Ive’s team of Apple designers has held regular meetings with automotive executives and engineers in recent months, in some cases trying to hire them. Recent recruits to Apple’s team include the head of Mercedes-Benz’s Silicon Valley R&D unit.

One person close to Apple said that Steve Zadesky, a 16-year Apple veteran who led teams developing the original iPod and iPhone, was leading Apple’s automotive research lab.[/su_quote]

Reuters is also reporting that the Cupertino-based Technology giant is learning how to make a self-driving electric car and is talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers, according to sources in the automobile industry.

Apple is exploring how to make an entire vehicle, not just designing automotive software or individual components. Apple is gathering advice on parts and production methods, the report said.
